The Institute for Infectious Diseases (IFIK), University of Bern has an opened position for a qualified and experienced staff bioinformatician to perform bioinformatic analyses of microbial and viral pathogens of clinical importance within its accredited Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) laboratory.
We seek
A researcher with competence in bioinformatics who will : A) perform and further develop bioinformatic data analysis (NGS data workflow, database curation, reporting), and B) provide statistical support for process validation and process automation in the accredited microbiology diagnostic department of the institute.
Essential qualifications include
- Postgraduate degree in bioinformatics or related field (MSc as minimal qualification)
- Relevant work experience in NGS data analysis (amplicon sequencing, whole genome sequencing, metagenomics / transcriptomics)
- At least 2 years relevant work experience with Unix (Linux) systems
- Advanced scripting skills (e.g., R / Bioconductor, bash, Python / Perl, Julia, Snakemake, Nextflow)
- Reliability, flexibility and ability to work in a dynamic team
- Excellent oral and written communication (reporting and documentation)
- Spoken and written fluency in German and English (German is mandatory for this position)

We offer The IFIK provides an international, collaborative atmosphere and a multidisciplinary approach to the entire spectrum of microbiology in diagnostics, research and teaching. Opportunities to be trained specifically on emerging technologies in bioinformatics and sequencing will be offered as needed.
The salary will be based on the University of Bern's system (salary and social insurance).
