Post- / Doctoral Candidate (0.75 FTE) - Mathematical modeling of biological systems on multiple scales

The Department of  Applied Biosciences and Process Engineering  at  Anhalt University  (Köthen campus) is seeking to fill one part-time position (75%) limited to 2 years for a

Postdoc / PhD candidate, no 436

for the EU / LSA-EFRE funded project as soon as possible. The position holder may receive further training at the university's doctoral center for life sciences. The employment relationship is based on the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states. The position is in pay group 13 TV-L.

Your Responsibilities :

• mathematical modeling of biological processes including numerical implementation on high-performance computers to address scientific questions
• literature review, formulation of scientific hypotheses, computer programming and problem-solving
• publishing results in international journals, preparing contributions to international workshops and conferences
• acquisition, setup, and administration of necessary IT infrastructure
• teaching mathematics, statistics, computer science and possibly life science topics to engineering students

The scientific focus of the project encompasses two main areas : the epidemiology of infectious diseases and the dynamics of hormonal regulation. Research in the former area has already been started by a PhD candidate, dedicated to exploring the evolution of emerging pathogens through the use of mathematical models and computational methods. Research in latter area, being relevant for the advertised position, will address fertility issues arising from hormonal disorders, a topic of increasing significance in aging populations of developed countries such as Germany. To stimulate follicular growth in affected women, hormones are administered according to specific medical protocols. However, due to the complexity of hormonal regulation, therapeutic success is not guaranteed in individual cases. Here too, mathematical modeling and scientific computing have the potential to provide new insights and ultimately improve therapeutic strategies. Collaboration between the researchers in both fields is encouraged, as they can benefit from sharing methodological aspects.
