Stellenbeschreibung

In the Bio-Inspired Circuits and Systems (BICS) group at the University of Groningen and in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information technology in the Group micro- and nanoelectronic systems at the Ilmenau University of Technology (TU Ilmenau, Germany) is a vacancy for a

Research assistant (PhD candidate) (f / m / d)

working on circuit design for an adaptive controller for bio-inspired sensing.

In the project SNACE (“Neuromorphic Sensing with Active Efficient Coding for Edge Computing”), we aim to bridge the gap between current neuromorphic technology and extreme-edge computing by leveraging the principles of the Active Efficient Coding Theory.SNACE is a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative effort between five institutions : the University of Groningen (Netherlands), the TU Ilmenau (Germany), the Forschungszentrum Informatik Karlsruhe (Germany), the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (Germany), and the Italian Institute of Technology (Italy). Specifically, the long-term goal is to deliver a framework for designing and characterizing a novel generation of Adaptive Neuromorphic Sensory (ANS) systems that can jointly extract sensory information from multiple sources while modulating the sensor transduction. The final outcome should be a prototype system consisting of (i) bio-inspired sensors endowed with adaptive controllers for sensor and encoding modulation and (ii) a neuromorphic processing and decision making unit to enable e.g. navigating robots in various environments.

One objective of SNACE is to build a hardware implementation of an adaptive controller modulating the bio-inspired sensors and interacting with the neuromorphic processing units for energy-efficient performance of the tasks. To pursue this ambitious goal, we seek a highly motivated PhD candidate that will contribute to the SNACE project in a joint work within the Bio-inspired Sensors group at the TU Ilmenau and the Bio-Inspired Circuits and Systems (BICS) group at the University of Groningen. Due to the interdisciplinary topic and to maximize the outcome, the PhD will be conducted in both institutions (first part in Germany, last part in Netherlands).

Your tasks

Your job tasks include :

  • Scaling up the bio-inspired acoustic sensor system (MEMS cochlea) experimental setup including readout and control using FPGA, discrete analogue circuits and ASICs
  • Design, simulation, experimental implementation and characterisation of an adaptive controller for sensor modulation of MEMS cochlea (hearing) and event-based camera (vision) using FPGA, discrete analogue circuits, and ASICs
  • Supporting the derivation of adaptation / control principles for the adaptive controller from numerical simulations
  • Supporting in building system demonstrator (robot), which uses the multimodal adaptive sensors
  • Evaluation and presentation of results and their scientific exploitation, e.g. in publications, lectures, reports, international conferences.
  • Constructive collaboration in the SNACE team and cooperation with the members

Your profile

For being part of the selection process is needed :

  • A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Electrical Engineering or related, with a strong background in hardware / software design. Applications from Physics, Computer Science and AI with an affinity for hardware implementation are also welcome.
  • Following competences are desirable :

  • Experience with digital and analog hardware design tools and language (e.g., Cadence, System Verilog or HDL)
  • Knowledge and experience with bio-inspired sensing systems (e.g. event-based camera, MEMS cochlea)
  • Programming skills, e.g. preferably python
  • A research-oriented attitude, is capable of taking initiatives and has a solid problem-solving attitude.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Motivated to develop your teaching skills and coach students.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level).
  • Please provide evidence of the qualifications required for the job by certificates and references. Please send motivation letter and CV.

    What we offer you :

  • attractive remuneration according to collective agreement (as per TV-L) incl. granting of a special annual payment
  • vacation entitlement of 30 days in the calendar year and additional days off on 24 / 31 December
  • flexible working time model
  • VBL - pension scheme in the public sector
  • From individual advancement with a wide range of continuing education opportunities to a variety of health and recreational offerings, you can expect an appreciative working environment at a renowned university at TU Ilmenau. In addition to an attractive, family friendly working hour’s model, you will also benefit from advantages such as the use of the dining halls of the Studentenwerk Thüringen, as well as participation in several attractive sport offers from the university owned sport centrum.
