Universität SiegenSiegen, DEFaculty : Faculty I : Faculty of Arts and Humanities | ID : 6370
The University of Siegen is a modern university with an international orientation and a focus on interdisciplinary research. It currently has around 14,000 students and covers a range of research fields from the humanities, social and economic sciences to natural sciences, engineering and life sciences. With over 2,000 employees, the university is one of the largest employers in the region and offers a unique environment for teaching, study, research and knowledge transfer.
We are seeking :
for the Department of Media Studies in Faculty I : Faculty of Arts and Humanities starting at the next possible date, a
University Professor (W3)
for Media aesthetics with a focus on digital media
Your Responsibilities :
You represent the entire spectrum of research and teaching the subject area in its full width, with a focus on digital media. The goal of the professorship is to develop an internationally relevant and networked research and teaching agenda in media aesthetics. The professorship is also dedicated to the dual question of how classical analog arts and practices are transformed in or through digital media and which aesthetic practices are emerging with specifically digital techniques. The research agenda should include the development of empirical and methodical approaches to (digital) media aesthetics and media analysis.
Your responsibilities include teaching in the media- and cultural studies courses at the University of Siegen (also in English), collaboration in the development of an internationally oriented curriculum as well as the development of an analytical-critical research practice area. In addition, the professorship teaches fundamentals of media studies, currently in particular through two lectures per year on space- and time-based media.
The successful candidate is also expected to play an active role in developing new research programs and to demonstrate an equal willingness to constructively engage in the university’s self-governing bodies.
The teaching duty is 9 semester hours per week.
Your profile :
- You fulfill the legal employment requirements of § 36 Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia. More information on these requirements can be found at service.uni-siegen.de / prof
- You have a relevant doctorate / PhD in the field of media research (if you obtained your doctorate in the German system, it was graded at least very good or magna cum laude)
- You have an excellent track record in media aesthetics with relevant contributions to theory development and a focus on digital media. You have successfully acquired research funding and implemented third-party funded projects, ideally in international and interdisciplinary research collaborations.
- Your work focuses on at least one of these research areas : digital moving images / film, audio, aesthetics of digital, sensor-based or data-intensive media, aesthetics of AI, data aesthetics or forensic aesthetics.
- Affinity to interdisciplinary working approaches is required, for example at the intersections with human-computer interaction, ubiquitous design or digital arts.
- Compatibility with current third-party funded projects at the university, such as the Collaborative Research Center “Media of Cooperation”, “Transformations of the Popular”, or the research initiative “Critical Data Studies”, is an advantage.
- Ideally your research profile intersects with – for example - current debates about questions of power, media and democracy, social inequality, the Anthropocene, critical aspects of (post-)digital aesthetics, gender and diversity, mobility, sound or visual studies or de- / postcolonial perspectives.
- Willingness to teach in English is required.
- Knowledge of written and spoken German is required. Very good knowledge of German (C1 level) is desirable; alternatively, it is expected to commit to acquire these skills at C1 level within two years. International applications are welcome.
We look forward to receiving your application package (CV, copies of certificates, description of previous research and teaching activities, list of third-party funding acquired) by 31.03.2025. Please submit applications solely via our Job Application Portal (
