Heidelberg University is a comprehensive university with a strong focus on research and international standards. With around 30,000 students and 8,400 employees, including numerous top researchers, it is a globally respected institution that is also of outstanding economic importance for the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.
The following position (TV-L E13 100% / 39,5 h / week) is to be filled at the Institute of Environmental Physics for a limited period of 2 years
Postdoctoral Researcher (f / m / d) : Aerosol Effects on Atmospheric Dynamics
The Institute of Environmental Physics newly conducts research on topics such global atmospheric and climate modeling with the appointment of a new professorship. We are looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral scientist for fundamental research on the effect of aerosols on atmospheric dynamics. The aim is to quantify and qualitatively understand circulation responses to temporal changes in aerosol radiative forcing. The work will include the use of climate model output and observations, and may include the performance and / or analysis of new climate model experiments, e.g., from CMIP7. The position is fully funded by the European Union’s H2020 project EXPECT (No. : 101137656 HORIZON-CL5-2023-D1-01). EXPECT will develop a capability for integrated attribution and prediction of regional climate changes - to which this position will contribute via the development of new forcing data. Specifically, the work includes the creation and testing of new datasets for representing aerosol effects in climate predictions and CMIP7 simulations. As successful candidate, you will internationally collaborate with other research institutes and modelling centers from the EXPECT consortium in Europe and beyond. The position is part of the new research team led by Prof. Dr. Stephanie Fiedler.
Your tasks :
- You will co-create a new anthropogenic aerosol dataset for CMIP7, coordinate project contribution and report results to other EXPECT partners
- You will be responsible for performing and analyzing experiments with ICON, Germany’s next CMIP model, and the scientific analysis of big data sets from model experiments and observations, which may include the application of automated detection algorithms for dynamic processes including machine learning for pattern recognition
- You will be responsible for the quality control of the results, the publication of the scientific findings, and the presentation of the results at international scientific conferences
- Active help in the supervision of bachelor and master projects and participation in our specific teaching program is welcome
Your profile :
We offer :
The position is not divisible due to the timeline for deliverables of the EXPECT project. Depending on qualifications, remuneration will be up to pay grade E13 TV-L.
We look forward to receiving your electronic application with the usual documents (CV, motivation letter, certificates, etc.) in one collated PDF file to [email protected] stating the job identifier „IUP-2024-PD1“. The deadline for applications is 30. September 2024 and the earliest possible start of the position is 1. November 2024.
