Amazon Web Services (AWS) is building the European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), an initiative that's creating growth opportunities in our Data Center operations. To support this expansion, we're looking for a Senior Center Engineering Operations (DCEO) Manager to join our team in the Berlin area, Germany.
In this role, you'll lead data center operations in our growing German facilities. AWS centers are the backbone of our ESC Region, housing critical IT infrastructure that requires uninterrupted cooling and power to ensure continuous uptime for our customers. As the Senior DCEO Manager, you'll be at the forefront of maintaining this crucial infrastructure.

Your responsibilities will extend across the region, where you'll lead a team of Facility Managers and Operations Engineers. You'll oversee best-in-class operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical infrastructure for AWS data centers. This position demands a highly driven, self-managed individual who can demonstrate an innovative mindset, proactively seek solutions to problems, and consistently strive for operational excellence.
We're looking for someone with strong data center operations experience who can thrive in our fast-paced, innovative environment.


Key job responsibilities
In this pivotal role you will be responsible for:

Safety Leadership: Set and maintain the highest standard for safety and actively promoting a world-class safety culture.

People Management: Be a manager of managers.
• Lead a diverse team of DC Operations management professionals
• Hire, develop, and retain top talent in DC Operations
• Foster collaboration with leaders in Finance, Safety, HR, Recruiting and other operational organizations
• Oversee vendor relationships and lead contract negotiations

Operational Excellence: Manage a mission-critical operations environment with electrical and mechanical equipment, including Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS’s), Switchgear, Circuit Breakers, Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS’s), Diesel Generators, Chillers.
• Execute strategic preventative maintenance and corrective break-fix planning on mission-critical infrastructures. Review and approve equipment maintenance and repair processes and procedures as well as the ability to tactfully drive continuous organizational change management.
• Preparing for and leading the organization through facility infrastructure incident management planning. This includes event planning, drill coordination, leadership escalation, incident mitigation, and post event resolution.

About the team
Data center Infrastructure Operations (THF) is responsible for the ESC data center infrastructure at Amazon Web Services. THF manages the design, planning, delivery, and operation of servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment, ensuring continuous customer access to the ESC Cloud. The team tackles complex supply chain challenges with numerous variables. THF comprises a diverse group of professionals, including software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers. The team collaborates across AWS to maintain high safety and security standards while delivering seemingly unlimited capacity at competitive costs. AWS fosters an inclusive culture that encourages innovation and ownership of ideas.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Knowledge of the electrical and mechanical systems involved in critical data center operations including systems such as feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS units, PDU units, chillers, pumps, air handling units, and CRAC units
- Experience hiring, developing, and managing high-performing technical teams
- Experience with vendor and contractor/subcontractor negotiation and management skills associated with construction and project execution
- This role requires you to be a national of an EU member state

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA
- Experience owning the operation of a mission-critical team or product
- Experience with large-scale technical operations or large-scale compute farms
- Experience with process improvement techniques such as Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma
