The Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics is developing a wide range of robots that enable people to interact more safely and efficiently with their environment. The robots are designed to operate in environments that are inaccessible or dangerous for humans and to support people in their everyday lives and at work.
What you can expect
The Perception and Cognition department is concerned with enabling robotic systems to perceive their environment holistically using the two dominant robot senses of touch and vision. Perception and cognition are elementary components for teleoperated assistance and autonomous robot systems, as they make reactive behaviour, attention control and situation interpretation possible in the first place. Stereo vision is the cornerstone for the exteroceptive perception of our robots. In addition to generating colour images, stereo vision enables the passive assessment of depth in a robot's environment. This capability enables our robots to safely navigate and interact with their environment - both indoors and outdoors - by providing reliable spatial awareness without active sensors.
