WE ARE SEEKING FOR Kühne Logistics University (KLU) inHamburg is investigating new approaches and methodologies toadvance the use of data and analytics for supply chain managementin collaboration with Evonik, one of the world’s leading specialtychemicals companies.
To support our research team, we are lookingfor a Research Associate & PhD student "Next-generation demandplanning Evonik" (gn*).
Research topic Demand planning is typicallyconsidered the starting point of all supply chain planning. Withbetter and more agile demand plans companies across industries canoffer better customer service, reduce costs and improvesustainability.
However, it is often a cumbersome and error-proneprocess, challenged by numerous uncertainties. Against thisbackground, there is strong interest at our research partner toleverage latest state-of-the-art solutions for improving demandplanning while enabling supply chain planners to manage thedecision explosion efficiently.
Here, latest AI and MLmethodologies can support planners in their day-to-day work butneed to be carefully monitored and calibrated, e.
g. planners needto set the right thresholds for alerts that allow anomaly detectionor need to interact with GenAI models to better understandparticularly high or low forecasts.
Moreover, coordinating demandwith production plans to ensure feasibility at multiple levelsposes a new challenge. The availability of innovative data sourcesand advanced machine learning models presents a significantopportunity to refine these planning processes.
Our goal is todevelop improved best practices and support shaping thenext-generation of demand planning at Evonik. Your ResponsibilitiesYou will conduct rigorous research to understand the best practicesin next-generation demand planning.
The four-year project will havethree individual deep dives that will be tailored according to theshared interests of all parties involved.
You collaborate closelywith the Evonik’s supply chain excellence team and work under theacademic guidance of Prof. Dr. Kai Hoberg.
The insights gleanedfrom your research will be developed into academic journal articlesand presentations at leading scientific conferences that will formthe basis of your PhD dissertation.
YOUR QUALIFICATIONSRequirements for employment are a very good degree in industrialengineering, business administration, mechanical engineering,business informatics, mathematics, or a similar field and thewillingness to do research and scientific work within the scope ofthe task.
Additionally, first experiences in the supply chainmanagement environment are required. We expect you to have verygood communication skills, both in dealing with academic colleaguesand with the contacts in the company.
You should demonstrate stronganalytical skills, enjoy working independently and responsibly, andhave fun dealing with large amounts of data.
Very good IT skills(data analytics, databases, programming) are an advantage. Goodcommand of the German language is a requirement.
PhD KLU supportsthe scientific employee in writing a dissertation on the researchtopic. As a state-recognized university, KLU has the right to awarddoctoral degrees.
The dissertation is usually done cumulatively onthe basis of three scientific papers. WE OFFER We offer anattractive salary and a personal, annual research budget to coverresearch-related costs (e.
g., conference visits, researchcolloquia, hardware and software). In addition, tuition fees fordoctoral studies at KLU are waived.
