Key responsibilities :

In recent decades hot-dry extremes have increased over Europe at a faster rate than any other region in the mid-latitudes. Apart from thermodynamic factors, changes in large-scale dynamics have been identified as crucial factors , however climate models appear to underestimate the role of certain circulation patterns for extreme weather types . This project will investigate changes in extreme heatwave risk in Europe and the role of atmosphere dynamical patterns in driving those changes in state of the art model experiments (high-res models in CMIP6 + MPI-ESM 100-member Grand Ensemble simulations) using machine learning tools and other advanced statistical methods. It will provide crucial information on the future risks from hot and dry extremes over Europe by at providing novel physical insights for recent record shattering extreme weather events that might not be captured by some models.

Requirements :

  • The successful applicant should hold a PhD degree in physics, mathematics / statistics, climate science or a related discipline
  • A solid background in climate and atmospheric sciences, and extreme weather ideally supported by knowledge of machine learning and time series analysis
  • Coding experience with e.g. Python / Matlab / R
  • Practical experience with High Performance Computing, and scientific programming
  • Expertise with scientific data analysis

The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Kai Kornhuber (PIK) and will work in close collaboration with Dr. Giorgia Di Capua (PIK) and Prof. Dim Coumou from the Institute for Environmental Studies – Water and Climate Risk Department, VU - Amsterdam.

We expect :
