Job Description

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies (HII-MT) Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII-MT.

For this internship, the SkillBridge intern will train as a Systems Administrator within HII-Mission Technologies, reporting to a designated HII Supervisor, with the goal to prepare the transitioning service member to function as an entry-level Systems Administrator, capable of supporting Windows/Linux environments within DoD infrastructure while adhering to security protocols and best practices. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.

Desired End State (3-4 month target)

At the end of four months, the intern will:

• Windows/Active Directory Administration Master Active Directory user and group management Implement and verify Windows system patches and updates Apply STIG requirements to Windows environments Configure and maintain Windows Server infrastructure
• Security and Compliance Achieve Security+ certification (if not already held) Demonstrate proficiency in DoD STIG implementation Understand security clearance requirements and protocols Learn enterprise backup and recovery procedures
• Enterprise Systems and Virtualization Gain hands-on experience with VMware environments Develop Linux administration skills (focus on RedHat) Learn enterprise patch management systems Practice help desk escalation procedures and documentation
• Mission Technologies will benefit from the military background of the Skillbridge intern and considers the Skillbridge internship an overall positive experience.

Assumptions/Restrictions

• Skillbridge Intern will possess a technical background and have training and experience with information systems, networks, and possibly the Linux operating system
• Skillbridge Intern will possess at minimum an active Secret security clearance.
• Skillbridge Intern will be available during core hours for critical meetings and training.

Essential Job Responsibilities

TRAINING LOCATION: Ramstein Airbase, Germany

Training Plan

Phase 1 – Familiarization and Introductions

• WEEK 1: Orientation and Fundamentals Introduction to HII systems, policies, and team structure Begin Security+ certification preparation (if needed) Basic Windows Server administration refresher
• WEEK 2: Active Directory Foundations Active Directory user and group management basics OU structure and Group Policy fundamentals Documentation and change management procedures
• WEEK 3: Windows Server Infrastructure Server roles and features configuration Windows Server backup and recovery procedures File server and share permissions management
• WEEK 4: Security Fundamentals Complete Security+ certification (if needed) Introduction to DoD STIGs and security policies Basic security compliance verification

Phase 2 – Systems Operation

• WEEK 5: STIG Implementation Windows 11 STIG implementation practices Server STIG compliance procedures STIG verification and documentation
• WEEK 6: Enterprise Patch Management Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) administration Patch testing and deployment procedures Patch compliance reporting
• WEEK 7: Virtualization Basics VMware vSphere fundamentals Virtual machine creation and management VM backup and recovery procedures
• WEEK 8: Linux Administration RedHat Enterprise Linux basics Linux command line essentials Basic Linux security configuration

Phase 3 – Administration, Integration and Troubleshooting

• WEEK 9: Advanced Linux Linux server administration Linux STIG implementation Service management and troubleshooting
• WEEK 10: Help Desk Operations Ticket management systems Escalation procedures Customer service best practices
• WEEK 11: Enterprise Integration Cross-platform system integration Network monitoring tools Enterprise backup solutions
• WEEK 12: Final Phase Advanced troubleshooting scenarios Documentation review and completion Final evaluation and transition planning

Additional Goals

• Instill project management basics through TPMP review, meeting attendance
• Teach Linux scripting
• Provide event support with supervision
• Project Management

Minimum Qualifications

Active-Duty Military ONLY within final 180 days of active-duty service. Applications accepted within final 12 months of active-duty service. Education and Experience dependent on Program of Instruction.

• 3 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field OR 7 years with HS Diploma
• Security+ or equivalent certification
• Must have Active Directory experience
• Linux experience
• Experience resolving more complex technical problems through a defined escalation process
• Experienced with help desk troubleshooting protocols
• Possess and maintain a US Secret security clearance and TESA status

Preferred Requirements

• Windows desktop operating systems (WIN11 SHB)
• Use of Enterprise Patching systems preferred
• Experience digesting and implementing DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG)
• Experience with patching Microsoft servers and workstations
• Experience with VMware
• Experience with RedHat Enterprise Linux, as well as experience working in Virtualized environments (i.e., VMware)
• Ability to read and digest technical information
