The DLR Institute of Future Fuels (DLR-FF) is researching technologies that ensure the efficient production of chemical energy sources and synthetic fuels from renewable raw materials, including closing the CO2 cycle.

On the path to climate neutrality, the researchers support the market entry of the technologies through investigations along the entire value chain.

The team of Carbon Management and Commodities of the DLR-FF division of Solar Chemical Process Development in Cologne-Porz is looking for a Student Computational / Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or similar (f / m / x), Numerical simulation of a solar rotary kiln

Das erwartet Sie :

Demand for cement has almost tripled in the last 25 years and CO2 emissions from cement production now account for 8% of global industrial emissions.

A key part of the process is the calcination of limestone into lime and CO2. This endothermic reaction requires high temperatures in excess of 900 C in the reaction chamber, which are generated in conventional calciners by burning fossil fuels.

To reduce emissions, the DLR project aims to replace fossil fuel combustion with solar energy. Therefore, a solar rotary kiln will be developed for the calcination process.

As experiments are costly and time consuming to set up and certain parameters are difficult to measure, it is crucial to have a model to better understand the heat transfer mechanism and the chemical reaction process inside the calciner.

As a radiative model of the crucible already exists, the focus of your thesis will be to numerically analyse the heat transfer mechanism by convection and conduction.

This will include natural convection inside and outside the crucible, forced convection induced by the rotation of the calciner and conduction into the holding structure of the calciner.

You will begin with a literature review of the existing and most commonly used models of convection and conduction in solar rotary kilns.

You will then construct a simplified 3-dimensional model of the reactor to classify the influence of convection on the heating behaviour of the reactor system.

You will also analyse the conductive losses by setting up a high-quality mesh to determine the losses by conduction into the calciner holding structure.

Thus, one of your tasks will be a detailed mesh study to find a suitable compromise between computation time, stability and accuracy.

Your results will be validated by experiments carried out in August / September on a solar rotary kiln reactor. Optionally : depending on time and your interest, a numerical study of multiphase flow in terms of heat transfer into the dense particle bed could also be carried out.
