What you will enjoy doing
Togetherwith steam reforming and autothermal reforming, partial oxidation is awell-established process for producing syngas as a feedstock for downstreamprocesses such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production and methanolsynthesis. To achieve optimal process performance, reactor designs must betailored to the specific feedstock and operating conditions. The analysis andoptimization of reactor designs require a detailed investigation of flowdynamics, reaction kinetics, and heat transfer, as well as the interactionsbetween these phenomena. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations providea powerful tool for performing such investigations.
Theobjective of this thesis is to review, evaluate, and enhance state-of-the-artsimulation methods for the CFD-based modelling of partial oxidation reactors.
- You conduct a literature survey on the performance and applicability of turbulence, reaction kinetics, turbulence-chemistry interaction, and heat transfer models under partial oxidation conditions.
- The Evaluationof kinetic mechanisms for the simulation of partial oxidation reactors will be a part of the work
- You create and validate CFD models for partial oxidation reactors
- Implementationand assessment of advanced modelling approaches from the literature within theCFD framework
What makes you great
- You are currently enrolled in a Master's program in chemical, process, or mechanical engineering, or a related field, withexcellent academic performance and good command of either German or English
- You have knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and reaction engineering /reaction modelling
- Ideally, you have experiencewith CFD simulations (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, STAR-CCM+, or comparablesoftware)
