Software Engineering PhD Intern, 2027

This internship is intended for students enrolled in their penultimate/final year of education in an accredited full-time PhD degree program located in the EMEA region. Participation in the internship program requires that you are located in Switzerland or Germany for the duration of the internship program. Interns will be required to be available to work full-time for a minimum of 13 weeks over the Summer 2027 (starting in either May, June or July) for the duration of the program. Individuals applying for this position will not be eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Minimum qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in a PhD degree in Computer Science or a related technical field in the EMEA region, and in your penultimate/final year of education.
• Experience working with data structures or algorithms during coursework/projects, research, internships, or practical experience in school or work (e.g., open-source coding).
• Experience with one or more general purpose programming languages (e.g., Java, C/C++, Python, JavaScript, Go, etc.).

Preferred qualifications:

• Relevant practical or internship experience (e.g., research assistant, teaching assistant, personal projects, etc) with programming in either: C++, Java, Python, or Go.
• Research experience in algorithms, architecture, artificial intelligence, compilers, database, data mining, distributed systems, machine learning, networking, or systems.
• Relevant practical or internship experience with one or more of the following: web application development, Unix/Linux, mobile application development, distributed and parallel systems, machine learning, information retrieval, NLP, networking, developing large software systems, or security software development.
• Ability to complete a 13-17 week full-time internship in Switzerland or Germany starting in either May, June or July 2027.

Responsibilities

• Research, conceive and develop software applications to extend and improve on Google's product offering.
• Contribute to a wide variety of projects using natural language processing, artificial intelligence, data compression, machine learning, and search technologies.
• Collaborate on scalability issues involing access to data and information.
• Utilise exposure to large-scale production software troubleshooting.
• Help maintain mission critical services.
