The Proxy Product Owner (Proxy PO) HIS Domain serves as the vital conduit between the onshore/principal Product Owner, clinical and administrative stakeholders, and the technical agile delivery teams. Operating within a Hospital Information System (HIS / KIS / EHR) software ecosystem, the Proxy PO ensures continuous backlog readiness, translates complex healthcare workflows into detailed functional requirements and user stories, and provides real-time domain guidance during sprint execution.
This role ensures development progresses without delay across distributed or offshore setups, aligning software deliverables with clinical compliance, hospital operational standards, and the core product roadmap.
Key Responsibilities
Backlog Management & Story Elaboration
- Collaborate with the primary Product Owner and business analysts to translate high-level product epics, clinical requirements, and roadmap objectives into actionable, testable user stories.
- Define clear, unambiguous acceptance criteria (using Gherkin/BDD scenarios where applicable) covering positive paths, exception handling, and edge cases.
- Maintain, groom, and prioritize the sprint backlog to guarantee that the agile development team consistently has well-defined work for upcoming sprints.
- Participate actively in Backlog Refinement, Sprint Planning, Daily Standups, and Retrospectives.
Clinical & Functional Domain Translation
- Provide daily, on-the-ground functional direction and hospital domain context to software engineers, system architects, and QA teams.
- Translate intricate inpatient, outpatient, and administrative hospital workflows into software functional logic (e.g., patient admission/discharge/transfer [ADT], order entry, clinical documentation, billing, bed management, and pharmacy/medication flows).
- Address real-time day-to-day requirements queries and blockers raised by the scrum team, escalating critical architectural or scope shifts to the primary Product Owner.
Interoperability & Regulatory Alignment
- Ensure stories account for essential healthcare data standards and interoperability requirements (e.g., HL7 v2/v3, FHIR, DICOM, and IHE profiles).
- Safeguard patient privacy and healthcare regulatory standards within functional definitions (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, MDR, local hospital data compliance).
- Work closely with UX/UI designers to ensure clinical workflows minimize friction for physicians, nursing staff, and administrative personnel.
Acceptance & Quality Governance
- Validate user story implementations against accepted criteria throughout the sprint lifecycle, participating in internal sprint demonstrations.
- Sign off on completed stories on behalf of or in coordination with the onshore Product Owner before release packaging.
- Assist Quality Assurance (QA) teams in formulating end-to-end clinical test scenarios, user journey simulations, and regression suites.
- Assist in user documentation, feature release notes, and operational training enablement for support teams.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Informatics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Nursing/Medicine, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
- Experience:
- 12-15+ years of professional experience in an Agile environment as a Product Owner, Proxy PO, Business Analyst, or Functional Consultant.
- Domain Knowledge:
- Solid understanding of core hospital clinical and administrative processes: Patient Management (ADT), Electronic Medical Records (EMR/EHR), Laboratory/Radiology orders, Pharmacy/Medication Management, Nursing workflows, and Medical Billing.
- Familiarity with healthcare standards such as HL7, FHIR, and terminology systems (e.g., ICD-10, SNOMED CT, LOINC).
- Agile Competencies:
- Practical expertise with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, or SAFe).
- Hands-on proficiency with Agile project management tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps).
Preferred Skills & Competencies
- Recognized agile certification: Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO), or SAFe POPM.
- iMED product domain expertise
- Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to bridge gaps between business/clinical terminologies and engineering logic.
- High proficiency in working across distributed, global cross-functional teams (e.g., onshore product management and offshore software development).
- Detail-oriented analytical problem solver capable of untangling complex hospital edge cases, multi-department handoffs, and workflow dependencies.
