The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our mission : Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

The job

The global loss of biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people is mainly due to population growth, increasing demand for resources and changes in land use and climate. A key challenge is therefore to develop sustainable relationships between humans and nature and to foster sustainable and just transformations. This requires both social-ecological research that helps to understand the feedback loops between nature, human well-being, governance and human influences, and sustainability transformation research that supports the identification of leverage points for sustainable futures. The DFG Research Unit “The Role of Nature for Human Well-being in the Social-Ecological System of Kilimanjaro (Kili-SES)” is dedicated to both tasks. The aim is to lay the foundations for political and societal decision-making that will support transformations towards sustainable human-nature relationships on Kilimanjaro.

To support our team, we are looking for a Postdoc (f / m / x) at the interface of social-ecological research and sustainability transformations research to start as soon as possible.

Your tasks

  • Identify the leverage points for transformative change in the Kilimanjaro Social-ecological System; identify which factors hinder and enable pathways towards sustainable and just Nature Futures
  • Identify leverage points for system transformation across scales, from individual people to initiatives and institutions, synthesizing work conducted by other subprojects in Kili-SES
  • Identify pathways to leverage transformations towards sustainable and just Nature Futures drawing on previous knowledge in the Research Unit and the findings of the Nature Futures Framework
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team of natural and social scientists and in close collaboration with the other members of the Research Unit
  • Publish results in international journals in cooperation with other members of the Research Unit
  • Contribute to project management

    • Your profile

  • PhD degree in ecology, social ecology, interdisciplinary environmental science or another relevant field
  • Excellent knowledge on and experience with social-ecological systems research and sustainability science
  • Excellent conceptual skills
  • Experience in iterative deliberation processes, Delphi processes and participatory pathways approaches
  • Ability to interact successfully with a diversity of social groups, intercultural skills
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary research group or environment
  • International publication record
  • Excellent English language skills

    Salary

    Remuneration according to the TVöD public-sector up to pay grade 13 including attractive public-sector social security benefits.
