Optical Engineer – Space-to-Ground Communication

A specialist in high-frequency RF and optical communications is looking for an Optical Engineer to develop cutting-edge optical ground terminals for space-to-ground communication. Based in a scenic location near Munich, this company operates at the forefront of satellite communications, bridging the gap between space and Earth with advanced optical technology.

The Role :

As an Optical Engineer, you’ll play a key role in designing and developing optical ground terminals that enable high-speed laser communication between satellites and Earth. You’ll be involved in everything from concept development and optical system design to hands-on prototyping and integration. Your work will directly contribute to advancing space-based optical communication, ensuring robust and efficient data transmission.

Your Responsibilities :

  • Develop and optimize optical ground terminals for space-to-ground laser communication.
  • Design optical systems, including beam tracking, fiber coupling, and free-space optics.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including RF, software, and hardware engineers, to integrate optical communication systems.
  • Conduct performance testing, troubleshooting, and validation of optical subsystems.
  • Support ongoing advancements in optical and laser communication technologies.

Who You Are :

  • You have 5-10 years of experience in optical system design, ideally in free-space optical communication, laser systems, or photonics.
  • You’re skilled in optical simulation and design tools such as Zemax, Code V, or equivalent.
  • You have experience with beam steering, fiber coupling, and adaptive optics.
  • You’re familiar with optomechanical integration and alignment techniques.
  • Basic programming skills in Python or C for data analysis and automation are a plus.
  • You thrive in an environment where hands-on work and collaboration drive innovation.
  • Why Join?

  • Innovative Work : Be part of a team pushing the boundaries of optical satellite communications.
  • Collaborative Culture : Work closely with experts across disciplines in a hands-on engineering environment.
  • Growth & Stability : Contribute to a growing sector with real-world impact and long-term stability.
  • Work-Life Balance : Enjoy a location that offers both Munich’s city life and the outdoor opportunities of the Alps.
  • Location & Flexibility :

This role is based in Bavaria, approximately 30-90 minutes from Munich, depending on your location. While home office arrangements are considered on a case-by-case basis, in-person collaboration is a key part of the company’s culture.

If you’re an Optical Engineer looking for a hands-on role in satellite communication, apply now to be part of a team driving the next generation of optical connectivity.
