We are looking for a candidate to join the international research project MOSMIN on the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of seismological data based on the registration of ambient seismic noise. The aim of the project is to create geotechnical and environmental monitoring services for mining-related deposits and dumps using a combination of Earth observation data, UAVs, and novel geophysical data and methods. The candidate will acquire seismic data at partner mining sites and use the ambient seismic noise to enable high-resolution structural characterization and monitoring of structures related to mining activities. The role includes the development of acquisition concepts for large temporary seismic networks (e.g. for ambient noise tomography) and working with project partners to integrate derived products (e.g. tomographic models) with different datasets and approaches. This work contributes to the development of integrative monitoring tools to optimize resource use and mitigate environmental risks in mining operations.
Your responsibilities :
- Develop novel, efficient acquisition and evaluation concepts for ambient seismic noise (tomography)
- Use and improve processing routines and develop new methods to use ambient noise to characterize and monitor the internal structure of mine dumps
- Participate in the conception, planning and implementation of passive seismic measurements, and seismic field experiments in mining sites
- Collaborate with project partners to integrate ambient noise data and tools into the project toolset
- Support the PI in preparing materials for project reports and deliveries
- Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at meetings and international conferences
Your qualifications :
Master's degree and PhD in geophysics (preferred), physics, geology or related disciplinesKnowledge and experience with passive seismic methods (especially ambient noise and tomography)Good numeracy and programming skills (Python, Matlab, C, C++)Ability, willingness, and interest to travel to project meetings and to participate in and conduct field trials abroadExperience with seismological field workExperience with industry-related projects and with the creation of services and products thereinExcellent communication skills and ability to work in a teamGood English language skillsDrivers License BWhat we offer :
