The Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI) conducts research and develops specialized solutions at the intersection of medicine, life sciences, and engineering.

To strengthen our team »CAR-modified T & NK Cells for Cancer Immunotherapy« at our Würzburg site , we are looking for a student to conduct a Master’s thesis . The team primarily focuses on the manufacturing of CAR-modified T and NK cells, with a special emphasis on developing an accelerated production process and ensuring compatibility between both cell products.

What you will do

Your Master’s thesis will be part of a project developing CAR-modified T and NK cell products for co-administration in patients. By combining both cell products, the aim is to achieve better outcomes in the treatment of solid tumors compared to CAR T-cell therapy alone. As part of your work, you will focus on modifying NK cells and take on the following tasks :

  • Planning and conducting cell biological, biochemical, and molecular biological experiments. The goal is to improve the isolation, cultivation and expansion of NK cells while optimizing their therapeutic function through gene editing.
  • Documenting your experimental results in compliance with good scientific practice, including the use of electronic documentation tools.
  • Conducting literature research on the topic and reporting your findings and experimental results in your scientific thesis.

What you bring to the table

  • You hold a Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences (e.g., Biology, Biomedicine, Biochemistry) or have an equivalent medical qualification.
  • Ideally, you have some laboratory experience with biological / biochemical methods and are familiar with data analysis using common software tools. Prior experience in cell culture is particularly desirable.
  • You are eager to learn new practical skills, approach unfamiliar topics with curiosity, and quickly develop an independent understanding through analytical thinking.
  • You are proficient in English.
