RESPONSIBILITIES

We offer digital solutions for a sustainable agriculture by optimizing crop production and support farmers worldwide through monitoring of soil and crop conditions, assisting with disease and pest recognition and recommend tailored treatments based on in-field conditions.

  • As Senior Software Engineer Backend Java / GIS you are responsible for the Java-based backend development, GIS architecture and operations inside the globally operating digital farming unit of BASF.
  • You ensure efficient and cost-effective handling and processing of large volumes of geospatial data layers, like machinery data, soil and satellite imagery etc.
  • In close collaboration with our remote sensing research team you support the implementation of satellite / drone imagery processing.
  • Together with the team you own the entire software engineering lifecycle for Digital Farming business needs, from designing architectural components, concepts and interface specifications to implementation, deployment and monitoring.
  • You also engage in product governance, including writing epics and user stories and support product managers within our agile development framework.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor degree in computer sciences, natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, GIS or related fields
  • extensive experience in Java backend development for production environments
  • solid experience with Java GeoTools, PostGIS, GeoServer and ideally in STAC
  • strong understanding of geospatial concepts, including coordinate precision, geometry simplification, statistical clustering, filters and geometric operations on both raster and vector data
  • familiarity with cloud-native geospatial technologies such as STAC and GeoParquet is an advantage
  • excellent communication in English and analytical skills to build as well as maintain good working relationships across the entire organization
