The Leibniz Institute for Crystal Growth (IKZ) is a leading research institution in the field of science & technology as well as service & transfer of crystalline materials. Our goal is to enable solutions for pressing societal challenges (e.g. communication, artificial intelligence, climate protection, health, etc.) through modern electronic & photonic technologies. The work covers the entire spectrum from basic and applied research to pre-industrial development and is carried out in cooperation with national and international partners from universities, academies and industry. The institute is part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin (https : / / www.fv-berlin.de / ) and a member of the Leibniz Association (https : / / www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de).

The Leibniz-Institut für Kritallzüchtung currently looking for a

with the possibility of a subsequent Master's thesis on the subject :

Electro- and Photoluminescence Studies of UV LED Degradation.

We are seeking a highly motivated Master's student to join our research team for a thesis project focused on  electroluminescence and photoluminescence studies of UV LED degradation . This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge optoelectronic light emitting diodes operating in the UV including device reliability analysis.

The efficiency and longevity of ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are critical for applications in sterilization, water purification, and sensing technologies. However, performance degradation over time remains a significant challenge in this field. This project aims to investigate the degradation mechanisms of UV LEDs mainly through detailed  electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy , identifying key factors affecting their stability and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-situ electroluminescence and photoluminescence measurements on UV LEDs while aging in a home-built setup.
  • Analyze emission spectra and identify degradation trends.
  • Correlate optical properties with electrical and structural changes.
  • Working with a multidisciplinary team to help interpret experimental data.
  • Contribute to research publications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field .
  • Programming skills, ideally Python.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor optoelectronics and solid-state physics.
  • Experience with optical spectroscopy techniques is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently.
  • Interest in experimental research.
  • What We Offer

  • Hands-on experience with state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques .
  • Opportunity to contribute to impactful research in UV LED technology.
  • Collaboration within an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Access to advanced laboratory facilities and mentorship from experts.
  • Possibility of publishing research findings in scientific journals.
  • 8 hours per week (by arrangement) a 13,69 €.
  • If you want to have more information about the project, please contact us :
