What to expect
In our modern society localization systems play an important role and people and industries depend on their availability. It is therefore desired to have a localization system that is available in all environments. For outdoor environments accurate localization is provided by globally available satellite-based systems such as GPS and Galileo. In contrast to outdoor environments, indoors typically no localization system is available. In your thesis / internship you therefore will work on the development of a novel magnetic field-based localization system. The proposed system uses distortions in the Earth magnetic field caused by magnetic material in buildings. The position estimation is done by comparing measurements of a magnetometer to a known map of the magnetic field. Having an accurate and updated map is therefore crucial for accurate localization. The thesis / internship focuses on the generation and the updating of magnetic maps and investigates to which extend a lidar-based SLAM system can support the map generation process.
