Research Assistant (m / f / d) for electronics development for quantum optical experiments on the International Space Station

Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 100%)

starting immediately. The position is limited until June 30, 2024, with the possibility of extension. The place of employment is Hannover with the possibility of partly mobile work.

We are seeking motivated applicants to join our team for the NASA and DLR project BECCAL, which aims to enable a multitude of experiments on board the International Space Station (ISS) with ultracold atoms for fundamental research and development of future quantum sensors.

Responsibilities and duties

Responsibilities and duties are carried out within the Quantum Sensing group and include developing hardware components for data acquisition, data processing and control of quantum experiments, especially on microgravity platforms.

The scope of responsibilities and duties include :

  • Development of electronic and mechanical components
  • Development of firmware (FPGA) and computer controlled test environments in various programming languages
  • Assembly and test of prototypes and flight hardware
  • Contribution to general, as well as safety-related, documents in the project
  • Specialist advice to the interdisciplinary project teams

Employment conditions

To qualify for the position, applicants should have :

  • a master‘s degree (or higher) in electrical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering or comparable qualification
  • experience in development of electronic components or in firmware development
  • experience in building and testing prototypes
  • a high degree of self-motivation, sense of responsibility and continuous learning ability
  • strong communication and team building skills
  • Openness to work in a diverse, international work environment
  • very good knowledge of the English and preferably German language
