Depressive disorders are among the most widespread psychiatric conditions in Europe, yet long-term treatment success remains a challenge due to the high heterogeneity of the disease. The integrated research platform “P4D”—a consortium of ten leading academic and clinical partners—aims to revolutionize the diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of depression through personalized, predictive, preventive, and precise medicine. As a key partner in this initiative, we focus on the intersection of molecular phenotyping and machine learning.

The Institute of Information Processing welcomes applications for the following position starting at the earliest possible date: Research Staff in the field Computational Biology (salary scale 13 TV-L, 100 %)

The fixed-term position is for a duration of 2 years. Within the scope of the position, there is the possibility of pursuing a doctorate.

Your role

• Work with diverse, multi-modal datasets, integrating genomic, transcriptomics, and clinical phenotyping data to build holistic models of disease.
• Develop machine learning models specifically optimized for biological data.and molecular structures.
• Implement causal learning frameworks to identify true mechanistic drivers of biological observations.
• Design deep learning methods to decode high-dimensional data, including single-cell (scRNA-seq) data.
• Translate results into robust clinical decision-support tools.
• Present research results at workshops, conferences, and in journals.
• Engage in scientific exchange and active collaboration with related research groups.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our BioAI Lab lead by Dr.-Ing. Jan Voges. The successful candidate must hold a university science degree in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Bioinformatics, or a related discipline.

In addition, we are looking for a candidate with the following:

• Sound understanding of machine learning and computational biology.
• Advanced skills in Python and familiarity with machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).
• Excellent scientific writing and communication skills in English (German is an asset).
