About us

The Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI-MM) in Bremen is one of the world’s leading research institutes in the field of marine research. Over 200 researchers, engineers, technicians, and support staff work together to explore the oceans – from nearshore waters to the polar seas and deep sea using state-of-the-art technology.

We are looking for a scientific coordinator, whose primary responsibility will be to act as an interface between fundamental scientific research, technical and administrative domains. The scientific coordinator will aid the managing director in coordinating operations of our institute to create an ideal research environment while ensuring the seamless transfer of institutional knowledge between successive managing directors.

Your tasks

As the scientific coordinator, you will support the managing director in the following tasks :

  • Organizing internal seminars, workshops, science days, and scientific outreach
  • Preparation of evaluation reports and preparation for scientific advisory board meetings
  • Preparation of advertisements and interviews for scientific recruitments
  • Coordination and strategic development of the institute’s workshops and library / information management
  • Representative for occupational safety, radiation protection, biological safety, dangerous goods, and hazardous substances in accordance with laws and regulations
  • Coordination of work safety management with the external safety officer
  • Coordination of duties as export control, export, and customs representative
  • Assistance with compliance with the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit sharing
  • Preparation of requested policies and plans, such as gender equality, guidelines for good scientific practice, and sustainability
  • Representation of the institute in national and international scientific organizations, such as “Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung”

Your profile

  • A master’s (M.Sc. or equivalent) degree in life or natural sciences, ideally holding a PhD in a relevant field; alternatively, a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in life or natural sciences followed with an advanced business degree, such as an MBA, is also considered advantageous
  • Circa of one to three years of experience in supporting the management and / or operations of a research institute or a comparable organization
  • For those with highly relevant experience within a similar research institute, this experience can substitute for the specific scientific background requirement
  • Leadership personality with high professional and social competence as well as the ability to work in a team
  • Excellent communication, moderation, and presentation skills; in particular the ability to convey complex information in a comprehensible and target group-oriented manner
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and German
