Digital Scientist / Engineer (PhD / MSc) (m / f / d)

The IFF Pharma Solutions business produces and sells high-performance cellulose derivatives, alginates and related polymers used for formulations across a broad variety of applications in the Pharmaceuticals, Food, and Industrial Specialties and Personal Care markets. The portfolio is a highly profitable part of the company and has shown significant value growth over the last several years.

We have an opportunity for a Digital Scientist in the Polymer Synthesis & Modification group part of IFF Pharma Solutions. This role is pivotal for the integration of digital technologies into Pharma Solution’s R&D organization to further strengthen its operational excellence.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Introducing, designing, and building digital solutions (such as automation and database).
  • Data analysis, scientific model development and deployment.
  • Application of state-of-the-art methods in computational materials science and machine learning.
  • Actively manage and deliver digital transformation projects.
  • Collaborate closely with other teams to define and deliver cross functional projects.
  • Serve as a technical enabler and partner within Pharma Solutions’ R&D organization.

About You

Job requirements :

  • An excellent master’s degree (PhD is a plus) in natural science, engineering, mathematics or computer science with 3+ years of experience. A good understanding of chemistry is a plus.
  • Proficient in data science programming languages (Python, R, Spark), SQL programming and database development (SQLServer, Oracle, PostgreSQL). Familiarity with cloud services (S3, Lambda, Glue). Proficient in application containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and familiar with version control methodologies (Git / Gitlab). Web application development experience (Django, Flask, React, Javascript).
  • Hands-on experience in introducing, designing, and building digital solutions.
  • A deep understanding of data analysis, statistics, machine learning and best practices in model development and deployment.
  • Strong self-learning capability, generalist experience and knowledge.
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills are required besides excellent problem-solving skills, but also ability to work independently.
  • Willingness to travel abroad.

    The position is preferably located within the Pharma Innovation Center in Bomlitz, Germany. Due to the intensive local interaction e. g. with the laboratories, at least basic German language skills are required. The main language in business interactions is English. The position is fulltime and regular (Vollzeit und unbefristet). Other locations can be Wilmington, Delaware, USA or Midland, Michigan, USA.

    The Pharma Solutions business will be taking on its next chapter of growth as a trusted partner for the pharmaceutical industry with the announcement to sell Pharma Solutions to Roquette. This move will position Pharma Solutions to expand its industry leadership through continued investment in innovation to meet the evolving needs of pharmaceutical manufacturers and developers worldwide.The sale is presently expected to close in the first half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The Pharma Solutions business unit will remain a part of IFF until close and, at such time, it will transition to Roquette.
