Main purpose of job :
The British High Commission (BHC) in The Bahamas is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic candidate to join us as a Corporate Services Officer. Corporate Services is the behind‑the‑scenes functions that keep the BHC running smoothly – this includes property management, budgeting and financial management and compliance (including health and safety).
We are looking for someone who can take the lead on setting the budget for the BHC, to ensure all activity falls within agreed forecasts. The successful applicant should therefore be highly detailed, use initiative and have a strong focus on consistent and effective delivery. They should have a good knowledge of local market conditions in The Bahamas so that value for money is considered when undertaking new suppliers and all activity. Organization and a methodical way of working is key to success, especially given the management of property that will require careful scheduling and overseeing of multiple external actors. Working as part of a small core team, you will need to be flexible, have a can-do approach, and be ready to support your colleagues.
You will deliver across all corporate services related matters for The Bahamas, working with a wider FCDO Corporate Services network based in the British High Commission Kingston, Jamaica, and regional expert hubs in other locations such as Mexico City and the UK. You will report to the Deputy High Commissioner and work closely as well with the High Commissioner on matters related to her Residence.
There will be opportunities for learning and development, especially on the internal systems and platforms that you will need to work on, as well as access to a network of corporate service colleagues across the FCDO.
Roles and Responsibilities :
Budget and Financial Management (40%)
- Prepare and manage the High Commission’s budget ensuring accurate budget expenditure, forecasting, value for money, financial controls and compliance.
- Responsibility for BHC cash expenditure and management, including daily counting and receipting all transactions.
- Responsibility for timely and verified payments to all suppliers.
- Monthly budget and forecast reports to the Deputy High Commissioner and High Commissioner, including identifying variances and recommending remedial action.
- Record keeping and updating all relevant systems.
- Monitor overall compliance with corporate policies and best practices on procurement, ensuring maximum value for money, including oversight of negotiations of external contracts with local suppliers and vendors.
- Auditing and regular checks on accounts to counter fraud, ensure correct usage of credit cards and expensing across the wider team.
- Supporting payments for projects and events.

No line management responsibility, but the role holder will be responsible for management of external suppliers.
Role holder will be responsible for the management of the BHC’s budget.
Learning and development opportunities
As part of the role, you will undertake training offered by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on various corporate services functions and the systems and platforms in use.
You can also undertake training through the UK’s Civil Service Learning Academy and the FCDO’s International Academy, which provide ample training on UK strategic priorities.
You will have a wide support network to draw from including the Corporate Services team in BHC Kingston, our Regional Hubs for Finance and Procurement in Mexico City, subject matter experts in the UK and a network of corporate service team members based in UK Missions across the Americas region to provide any advice and guidance you may need.

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in the Bahamas at time of application.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 12 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.
