Who we are ...

Our primary focuses at Fraunhofer IWES are on wind energy and hydrogen technologies. Our institute is home to more than 300 scientists and employees as well as over 100 students from over 30 countries pursuing careers in applied research and development at nine sites. We secure investments in technological developments through validation, shorten innovation cycles, accelerate certification procedures, and increase planning accuracy by means of innovative measurement methods.

You will be part of the group »Global Turbine Dynamics« at the DyNaLab at our site in Bremerhaven. At present, our team consists of six research associates. Our group conducts research in the field of aero-servo-hydro-elastic simulations of wind turbines with a focus on improving simulation and validation methods for onshore, offshore, and floating wind turbines. Simulative analysis of the system dynamics, loads, and frequencies of wind turbines is also part of our job. Become an active member of the team; we are keen to hear your ideas! What you will do

These duties await you ...

You will support the team in a joint project with the groups »Advanced Control Systems« and »Power Electronics and Grid Integration«. Together with us you will develop a novel control approach to satisfy the grid stability requirements under grid events. You will integrate this into our existing research wind turbine controller. In conventional load simulations, power systems and their impact on turbine performance are often neglected. However, the stability of power systems is critical for mass implementation of wind energy systems, and it will become even more important with increasing share of renewables in the system. Your task will be enhancing turbine controller capabilities from results of joint mechanical-electrical system co-simulations with functional mock-up units. By doing so, you will learn the basics of control system logic and their evaluation to understand their correlations. You will be working with »MoWiT« (Modelica for Windturbines) simulation model and MATLAB Simulink, to create and tune the controller. You will also work with our co-simulation platform which allows coupling of models from different tools and fields. Sound like a lot? You are studying Control Theory, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering in a master´s program? You have a basic knowledge in control theory? Are you familiar with MATLAB Simulink? You understand and speak English and German? Great, we are looking forward to your application!

The position is limited. Depending on the type of employment, a different contract duration may apply. In case of a student assistantship, the working time consists of 60 hours per month. During an internship, the working time consists of 39 hours per week. In the case of a student assistantship, remuneration is based on the general works agreement for employing assistant staff. In the case of an internship, remuneration is based on the federal government guidelines for intern salaries.
