Hauptaufgaben
The supervisor assigns projects and indicates priorities, general objectives, and deadlines. The employee is expected to perform the duties with a high degree of independence. The work requires expertise in handling highly diverse, difficult projects / situations, handling incidents and emergency situations where information is incomplete or conflicting reports are received.
Serves as Physical Science Technician, and Radioactive Detection, Indication and Computation (RADIAC) calibrator in the Nucleonics Area Calibration Laboratory (ACL) and assist in the operation of the Radioactive Material Processing Facility (RMPF). Assist in the operation of the US Army TMDE Activity, Region Europe (USATA-RE), Nucleonic Area Calibration Laboratory (ACL), Health Physics Section and USAREUR Radioactive Material Processing Facility (RMPF). This position requires a knowledge of the physical sciences consistent with that of a physical science technician and stressing the fields of physics, chemistry and electronics.
Assists in developing methods and procedures for implementing the USAREUR Radiation Protection Program (RPP). Conducts periodic radiation surveys using a variety of methods (i.e. air sampling, wipe tests, liquid scintillation, spectroscopy) to ensure personnel, equipment, and the environment are protected. Performs prescribed leak tests on controlled sources. Analyzes and evaluates radiological surveys, measurements, and wipe tests to satisfy Nuclear Regulatory Commission, (NRC) license requirements and US Army Radiation Authorization requirements, and thus continuance of the RPP. Analyzes and evaluates wipe tests submitted by European and Southwest Asia Theater units who employ radioactive source material and isolates and determines deviations from normal values, and other discrepancies if present. Assists in preparing a comprehensive test report addressing the findings and / or recommended / required corrective actions if deficiencies are identified. The technician often has to select the appropriate auxiliary equipment, or an alternative method of testing because of the sample size and / or type, and the limitations of equipment, which are dependent upon the type of RAM and / or evaluation requirements. Ensures personnel exposures to radiation are accurately recorded. Ensures safe-working practices are followed comprehensively. Ensures dosimetry and other protective devices are available and worn by all radiation workers. Ensures that appropriate warning signs and notices are posted. Provides assistance in radiation accidents and excessive or abnormal radiation exposures to identify causes and effects. Prepares comprehensive reports or briefings to advise operating officials of unsafe environmental conditions and required remedial action. Performs calibrations and isolate malfunctions of complex and unique RADIAC equipment that requires measurement accuracies only available at Primary and Secondary Reference Level USATA laboratories. Prepares test and certification reports for customer use, providing specific information such as assigned values, corrections, and measurement uncertainties for instruments being calibrated.
As a technician and assistant to the local technical expert, assists in the management, operation, and control of the USATA-RE Health Physics Section, Nucleonic Calibration Area Laboratory, and USAREUR RMPF in accordance with published standards. Execution of duties includes assisting in maintaining a Radiation Protection Program (RPP) that encompasses requirements in both U.S. Army and Host Nation statutes. Manages and controls comprehensive database required for the radioactive material inventory of the Nucleonic ACL and USAREUR RMPF. Performs demilitarization's of devices with radioactive components. Receives radioactive material for USAREUR RMPF. Controls radioactive material from arrival at USAREUR RMPF until disposed of. Operates and monitors complex electronic equipment which measures and analyzes radioactive material which may subsequently be identified and / or quantified, stored, packaged, and labeled. Performs physical inventories of radioactive source material / equipment. Coordinates shipments of accumulated Radioactive Material (RAM) generated from USAREUR / 7th Army and other theater-wide Department of Defense organizations to the facility and subsequently to designated CONUS facilities for final disposition. Ensures guidelines and regulations which cover the handling, processing, storing and transportation are fully met.
Duties include making procedural readjustments when problems occur, and in the laboratory situation must possess the ability to use a variety of National Institute of Standards and Technology traceable sources to calibrate and adjust a variety of equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
