European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques. For our HED group we are looking for a The Position

• Study of Fe-bearing materials at in-situ conditions relevant for planet formation, planetary evolution processes and impact events
• Participate in R&D studies of X-ray scattering experiments exploiting high photon energies
• Participate in developing dynamic compression experiments at the HED Scientific Instrument at European XFEL
• Preparation of PhD thesis and participation in the PhD program of European XFEL

Requirements

• University/Master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Earth Sciences (Mineralogy/Geochemistry) or equivalent qualification
• Strong interest in experimental work at a large scale facility
• Eligible to enroll in the PhD program at the TU Dortmund
• Good communication skills and ability to work in an international and multi-disciplinary team
• Good knowledge of English

Considered an asset:

• Experience with synchrotron radiation or FEL experiments
• Hands-on experience in experimental set-up design/installation/commissioning
• First experience with high-pressure experiments (diamond anvil cells or dynamic compression)
• Basic programming skills using Python or similar programming tools

Compensation & long-term security
