University of CologneCologne, GermanyWe are one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe and one of the most important employers in our region. Our broad range of subjects, the dynamic development of our main research areas and our central location in Cologne make us attractive for students and researchers from around the world. We offer a wide range of career opportunities in science, technology, and administration.
Fluorescence microscopy is an integral part of modern biomedical research and development and is utilized to monitor and identify cells, cell components and microorganisms, but requires a complex optical setup, in particular using objectives with high numerical aperture and specialized colour filters, combined with a large foot- print and high acquisition costs.
The aim of the BMBF-funded FluoPolar project at the Humboldt Centre for Nano- and Biophotonics is the realisation of a lens-free alternative to traditional fluorescence microscopy, where required optical components can be integrated directly on a camera chip, thus enabling the examination of biological samples in direct cont- act as lab-on-a-chip, utilizing newly developed polariton filters.
We are looking for suitable candidates to develop and integrate thin film optical filters on-chip and perform proof-of-concept experi- ments on biological samples. The project is highly oriented towards technology-transfer with the possibility of creating a BioTec spin-off.
YOUR TASKS
- design and integrate novel optical filters on CMOS
- optimize fluorescence imaging performance
- conduct validation experiments on biological samples
- computational image analysis and enhancement
YOUR PROFILE
in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Biophysics or a closely related study subject with excellent results (or a corresponding Master degree for the PhD position). The ideal candidate is highly motivated, team-oriented with a strong interest and expertise in the interdisciplinary fields and keen to transfer scientific results to application. Experience in either microscopy, thin film optics and deposition, or cell culturing is desired, with an interest to work in all those fields.
WE OFFER
The University of Cologne is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. Women are especially encouraged to apply and will be considered preferentially in accordance with the Gender Equality Act of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (LGG NRW). We also expressly welcome people with disabilities / special needs or of equal status.
The positions are available as soon as possible on a full-time basis (39,83 hours per week) for the Postdoc position and part- time basis (19,92 hours per week) for PhD position. They are limited until 30.09.2025. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary will be based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.
