Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Correction’s Agribusiness Unit is charged with providing agricultural training opportunities to inmates to enhance re-entry and reduce recidivism, while reducing food cost for the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC).

Perform daily duties of a large farm operation which includes production of row crops, vegetable crops, lumber products, maintenance of buildings, grounds, roadways and the operation and maintenance of all farm equipment utilizing inmate workforce. Provide training, supervision and evaluation to inmate workforce while performing all farm tasks.

This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver's License. Knowledge of row and vegetable crops from planting stage to market. General knowledge of timber / lumber production, maintenance and operation of farm equipment, building construction and land management. Demonstrated ability to operate farm equipment and ability to supervise, follow written and oral instructions, keep accurate records and solve practical problems.

Additional Considerations

Agricultural, construction or equipment experience. Possession of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Pesticide Application Permit or the ability to obtain them.
