The Engineering Manager is a strategic role tasked with supercharging the output of Above The Fray’s delivery organization.
With oversight of the architecture, development, and quality disciplines, the Engineering Manager is responsible for protecting and enhancing ATF’s capabilities to build the right product , build the product right , and build the product fast .
ATF’s continued growth demands sustainable scalability from the delivery organization. The Engineering Manager will be a key part of installing this capability by building industry-leading people , process , and technology .
Objectives
Champion Locality and Simplicity to influence the development of performant, stable architectures
- Develop standards and guidelines for low-level architecture and execution
- Ensure engineering team stays abreast of new technologies and tools
- Enable greater collaboration between engineering and business analysis teams
- Deepen engineering team’s ownership of both low-level and high-level architecture
Enable Focus, Flow, and Joy to increase the productivity and happiness of the engineering team
- Identify efficiencies to improve ease-of-use for overhead quality and engineering processes
- Develop runbook to codify and standardize common development and support tasks
- Identify opportunities to improve QA quality through automation and scripting
- Continually enable the success of all teams and eliminate roadblocks
Achieve Improvement of Daily Work through continuous improvement and accountability
- Establish performance metrics for each team and work to exceed metrics
- Hold team members accountable to expectations and provide coaching where needed
- Implement better feedback loops to enable real-world learning for all team members
- Empower team members at all levels to influence process and provide feedback
Foster Psychological Safety to encourage knowledge sharing and learning from mistakes
- Install and empower project and team leaders to further support team members’ day-to-day work
- Implement blameless postmortems to prevent repeat mistakes and share accountability
- Elevate teams by rewarding good-faith effort and talent without tolerating bad-faith behavior
- Foster a learning culture where team members work together more closely to ask questions and share knowledge with their peers
Maintain Client Focus to ensure engineering team is highly integrated with client needs
- Increase engineering team’s awareness of client priorities and project impact
- Deepen ties between client services team and engineering team
- Ensure project teams’ knowledge of software requirements and functionality
- Establish living documentation for both functional and non-functional areas
Responsibilities
- Manage and mentor engineering team members
- Develop strategic department goals to continuously improve engineering capabilities
- Own strategic and day-to-day output of engineering team
- Invest in new and existing talent to ensure a strong, flexible engineering organization
- Manage continuing education program to empower professional development
- Provide clients with white-glove experience when addressing concerns
- Participate in resourcing to ensure all projects are well-staffed
- Recruit, screen, and onboard new team members
- Serves as subject matter expert for technical questions, for both internal and external stakeholders
- Own the technology stack and tools, keeping up-to-date with industry trends and best practices.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience with ecommerce technology platforms (including but not limited to Adobe Commerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Shopware, Shopify, etc.)
- Experience with system integrations that are crucial to ecommerce success, such as ERP, OMS, payment services, WMS or fulfillment, CMS, CRM, and more.
- Experience working on agile teams that use Scrum or Kanban as agile methodologies. Certification is a plus.
- Experience using JIRA or other Project Tracking software is preferred.

- Aptitude for leadership and multiplying the talents of others
- Keen attention to detail and critical thinking skills
- Flexible to work in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
- Strong leadership qualities, including the ability to inspire and motivate teams, delegate effectively, and make strategic decisions to drive project and product success.
- Superior interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Experience working with a global team is preferred.

- Planet Earth (EU desired for this role). Position is fully remote.
- Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, with team across the USA.
- APAC and EMEA offices.
Compensation : (may vary upon region)
- Position is full-time salaried
- $75k to $90k DOE
