Students: Parametric CAD & Mesh Automation for Power-Electronic Modules
The Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nanosystems ENAS specializes in the development of smart systems – so-called intelligent systems for a wide range of applications. These systems combine electronic components, micro- and nanosensors, and actuators with communication interfaces. Fraunhofer ENAS develops individual components, the technologies for their manufacture, as well as system concepts and system integration technologies, and translates them into practical applications. Fraunhofer ENAS supports customer projects from the initial idea through design, technology development, or implementation using existing technologies, all the way to a tested prototype.
The Micro Materials Centre (MMC) department is concerned with the reliability of electronic components. The application-oriented research aims to improve the reliability of electronic components by means of suitable experimental investigations and the use of numerical models and, furthermore, to carry out a prognosis of the remaining service life.
This position focuses on developing an open-source workflow for parametric geometry generation and automated meshing of power-electronic modules. The extended research investigates AI based approaches to automating CAD modeling and mesh generation.
Are you interested in AI-based finite-element modeling and simulation? Join our Micro Materials Centre (MMC) department for an exciting student research position starting immediately, with the possibility of continuation.
Be part of change
- Evaluate open-source CAD and meshing tools for geometry and assembly modeling.
- Develop and automate parametric models for components and assemblies.
- Research automated mesh-generation methods with controllable refinement and quality checks.
- Run baseline simulations, perform mesh-convergence studies, and develop reusable post-processing scripts and reports.
What you contribute
- Enrolment at a German university in Mechanical, Electrical, Computational Engineering, Computer Science, or a related Bachelor’s or Master’s program.
- Programming experience in Python, Julia, Rust, or a similar language; familiarity with Git and Linux is advantageous.
- Experience with CAD design (e.g., SolidWorks or similar), meshing, and finite-element analysis (e.g., ANSYS or ABAQUS) is desirable.
- Experience or strong interest in AI-assisted engineering, such as generative CAD, simulation-driven optimization, digital twins, or neural surrogates is a plus.
- Good English skills; German is beneficial but not required.
- A structured, independent working style and strong documentation skills.
- Willingness to participate regularly in on-site activities at the institute.
What we offer
