PREVIOUS APPLICANTS NEED NOT APPLYAbout the roleAn exciting full-time opportunity is available for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Gas Turbine Aerothermal Performance, to join the Oxford Turbine Research Facility (OTRF) team at the Oxford Thermofluids Institute (Osney Mead).
This is a fantastic opportunity to develop next generation component technology, and contribute towards its inclusion in current and future Rolls-Royce civil aerospace products.
If you are interested in aerothermal experiments and with a close collaboration with industry, this position will be rewarding.
This project will examine the thermal performance of next generation turbine blade cooling concepts with close working with our industrial partner Rolls-Royce.
Optimising turbine aerothermal efficiency is key to the viability of sustainable aviation fuels. The Oxford Turbine Research Facility is a world-leading and highly engine-representative facility that delivers thermal assessment akin to engine thermal paint tests using advanced IR measurements techniques.
We examine performance experimentally, and use numerical / analytical analysis to model and understand behaviour. You will be responsible for the design and thermal performance assessment of a range of turbine blade geometries and novel cooling concepts.
You will also be responsible for the design of a novel combustor simulator for the facility. It is expected that your work would contribute towards advancing the state of the art in gas turbine cooling technologies and highly impact current and future engine design at Rolls-Royce.
About youYou should possess a relevant PhD / DPhil (or be near completion). Proven experience in aerothermal experiments and / or turbine design is essential.
Experience in data analysis, design using FEA and CAD packages, as well as CFD is also desirable. Good time management, organisation and ability to work effectively in a team and individually will also be essential to deliver the project.
