Senior Software Engineer – Backend System - SDV Hub (m/f/d)

CARIAD delivers automotive software across multiple vehicle segments for the Volkswagen Group including high-volume, premium, and luxury vehicles.

With our new SDV Hub, we are venturing out and creating software-defined vehicles (SDV) of the future that are transforming the way our Group conceptualizes, designs, and engineers our vehicles.

Together with experts from Audi and Volkswagen, the SDV Hub will support the development of an SDV architecture and software platform that will enable the ecosystem in a collaborative and fast-growing environment.

For the core of the SDV Hub, we are looking to work with technical experts across all levels that are ready to rethink the way we do software for our future cars.

YOUR TEAM

You will spearhead and drive key areas of the future Software-Defined-Vehicle (SDV) software stack together with fellow engineers and their respective teams, These efforts will span various domains of the vehicle, with a primary focus on Infotainment, Body, Power Distribution, and Connectivity solutions.

In the role of Embedded Software Engineering Lead Backend - SDV Hub (m / f / d), you will play a pivotal role in supporting a global engineering operations team tasked with maintaining vehicle software updates and ensuring the health of our fleet, both today and in the future.

Specifically, you will take the lead in proactively monitoring, triaging, and providing support for vehicle software updates and associated fleet health management data.

Situated at the heart of vehicle software engineering, this role offers cross-functional visibility and represents a groundbreaking opportunity to revolutionize the connected car segment.

You will be instrumental in developing streamlined and automated processes for managing vehicle software updates, laying the foundation for a future where connectivity and efficiency seamlessly intersect.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Design, develop and maintain back-end systems and databases for automotive core services including real-time communication infrastructure, telemetry / metrics ingestion infrastructure and OTA infra for hosting / versioning / tiered distribution
• Build and deploy continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI / CD) pipelines for the above core services
• Design and implement REST APIs for communication between embedded systems and back-end servers
• Provide support for over-the-air (OTA) software updates and remote diagnostics of vehicle systems.
• Manage version control systems (, Git) for source code repositories and ensure proper branching and merging strategies
• Implement monitoring and logging solutions to track system performance and diagnose issues in production environments
• Optimize back-end systems for scalability, reliability, and low-latency communication with embedded devices while complying with cybersecurity standards and implement measures to protect sensitive data
• Guide and define engineering requirements and design scalable back-end architectures together with cross-functional teams

WHO YOU ARE

• A bachelor's or master’s degree in computer science, robotics, software engineering, physics, numerical modeling or another related field
• Ideally, eight years of experience in high-performance object-oriented software design
• Ability to approach problems from a platform / framework mindset and design for scaling software across multiple brands and vehicle programs
• Experience with overarching system design and SW architecture
• Experience with different (embedded) operating systems such as RTOS, QNX, Linux and Android, etc.
• Expertise and proven track record of making significant hands-on contributions in one or more of following programming languages : C++, Rust, Java, and Kotlin.
• Self-motivated with the ability to dive right in, develop effective processes, and work to ensure our vehicles remain connected
• Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory, German is beneficial
