Postdoctoral Researcher
The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), a scientific organizational entity of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher, starting in October 2024, in the research project Prototype Workflows for User Relevant Climate Information and Impact Modelling (ProImpact).
The position is limited till 30.4.2027.

GERICS develops science-based prototype products and services in support of government, administration, and business in their efforts to adapt to climate change.
It builds up a national and international network structure to integrate existing competences and knowledge, and to link various actors within the complex area of climate change.
The position in ProImpact is part of the Smarter module of the BMBF funding measure WarmWorld. The project explores different concepts to integrate climate information workflows into data streams of exascale Earth System models.
GERICS will focus on the technical aspects of integrating existing workflows into the data streams and creating a library of tools to support easier implementation of future climate information workflows.
Your tasks
- develop solutions to enable users of climate information to access and use next generation climate models and digital twins of the Earth system
- explore IO technologies for accessing and working with data streams from climate models and cloud object storage
- willingness to cooperate with partners in ProImpact, WarmWorld and beyond
Your profile
a university degree in meteorology, physics, maths or other related disciplines in natural sciences and Earth science is essential.
A Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline would be beneficial
- profound experiences using python for geoscientific applications (e.g., xarray, pandas, numpy, dask) in a Linux / Unix / HPC environment
- experience with Fortran would be advantageous
- experience in processing of climate data in an HPC environment (familiarity with data formats and meta data conventions, e.
g., NetCDF, Zarr, CF conventions)
- skills in collaborative software development practices using version control (git)
- experience in communicating scientific results to scientists of different disciplines
- excellent written and oral communication skills in German and / or English
- willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team at the Climate Service Center Germany
- interest beyond the pure scientific analysis of data and processes is expected as the focus of our center is on the provision of decision making knowledge
