Development Manager (Fundraising)

Location : Remote / Hybrid (within + / - 1 hour CET; candidate must have an existing permit to live and work in the country they reside )
Contract : 1 year with the possibility for an extension by mutual consent
Position Summary
GRI is an independent NGO and standard-setter and over the last 26 years, our standards have created a global language used by organizations to provide transparency.
At GRI we enable organizations to assess and report on the environmental, social and economic impacts of their activities.
We also help build organizational capacity for sustainability reporting : from our Academy training courses to working with licensing partners to enable digital reporting with GRI’s standards.

The main purpose of this role is to support in securing grants and managing donor relationships, including but not limited to foundations, governments, high-net-worth individuals, and corporations.
It involves the methodical preparation of proposals to support GRI's objectives and focuses on internal coordination while supporting donor outreach, cultivation, and stewardship to advance GRI's mission and impact.
Responsibilities
Delivery
- Research and identify potential funding opportunities, and maintain a pipeline of prospective donors and funding sources.
- Conduct donor meetings, presentations, and site visits to showcase GRI's work and impact.
- Maintain and build relationships with funders and other strategic partners.
- Identify and prioritize key funding opportunities aligned with GRI's goals and initiatives.
- Design, write and coordinate the development of grant proposals in collaboration with GRI Staff.
- Manage a transparent system to track all grant applications, awards and agreements by ensuring that all requirements of the grant are met in order to be compliant not only financially but also aligned to donor requirements.
Engagement
- Initiate and manage direct outreach efforts to foundations, governments, high-net-worth individuals, and other potential donors.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with prospective donors, ensuring personalised engagement and effective stewardship.
- Develop and execute tailored cultivation plans to engage donors and secure major gifts and grants.
- Work closely with the GRI team to ensure a coordinated approach to fundraising.
- Collaborate with the marketing and communications teams to develop and implement donor communication strategies.
- Coordinate with various units within GRI to develop project descriptions, budgets, and timelines that align with donor requirements.
Work Experience
- Proven track record of successful fundraising, particularly in securing major gifts and grants from foundations, governments and / or high-net-worth individuals.
- At least 5 years of experience in a similar sector in nonprofit fundraising, with a proven track record of securing donations and grants.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in proposal / grant writing; working with foundations and other funding sources.
- Familiarity with philanthropic trends and an understanding of the not-for-profit sector.
- Knowledge of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and sustainable business practices.
Knowledge and abilities
- Fluency in written and spoken English, and fluency in one other language is an advantage.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage and inspire donors.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail and accuracy is critical.
- Strong administrative skills, creative, self-motivated with the ability to set priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and grant management software.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Willingness to travel as needed to meet with donors and attend events.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in an international and multi-cultural setting.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment where change is ongoing.
